ZHU is easily one of the most interesting crossover artists in electronic music at the moment, operating on multiple levels at once and earning clout at all angles. On the pop side, his Tame Impala collab “My Life” elevated him into the realm of art-electronic, helped along by the aesthetic unity behind his stellar tech-house EP RINGO’S DESERT PT. 1 and its dope-ass merch. Meanwhile, his BLACKLIZT side project is helping steer kids towards techno. All that follows collaborations with Nero & Ekali, which helped widen his fanbase even further.
Now, in another titan collaboration, ZHU has teamed up with Majid Jordan, OVO’s star R&B duo, for a new song that’s destined for plenty of baby-making playlists to come. “Coming Home” is a slow rider, letting its elements peer out one at a time. Its emotional clutch comes from its wistful sensibility, as if that moment of pulling into the parking spot before seeing a missed loved one was put on a timeless loop that’s replaying in your mind. Also, I feel like its production was clearly inspired by ZHU’s work with Kevin Parker: let’s hope that influence continues.
