The 83rd is the alias of New York producer, label head, and founder of Sermon 3 Recordings. His usual brand is somewhere between conventional hip-hop and experimental, backed by artists such as Trippjones and Jamie XX. This release, coming in at just three short tracks, is a definite departure from his earlier works, which were more in the vein of hyper-political instrumental beats with some inherent New York City claustrophobia hidden in the mix, i.e. driving but suffocating. Patricia comes closer to the vein of artists like Jessy Lanza and DJ Earl, footwork-inspired R&B jams that carry one feeling and examine it thoroughly. It’s a more subdued turn for the beatmaker, taking the influences around him closer to the chest, as evident by the Eartheater feature. The exception is the first track, a briskly paced unassuming song with some electroacoustics thrown in, showcasing the artist’s range and attention. Check it out below.
