When it comes to the budding genre of French house music, there’s a myriad of iconic tunes. But of all the gems we’ve received from that part of the world in the past few decades, there’s one song that will forever go down in history. “Music Sounds Better With You” debuted in 1998 and has been endlessly admired for its unforgettable electronic-tinged guitar riff and addictive vocals. It’s been revealed the single has been revisited by the original producers, Stardust, and its remastered version will be made available to all.
Despite the single’s explosive success, it was the only track ever released by Stardust, the Parisian trio of Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, producer Alan Braxe, and vocalist Benjamin Diamond. According to Billboard, the band’s members returned to the studio last month to work on a remastering of the track ahead of its 20th anniversary digital release, marking the first time it will be available on streaming platforms. Braxe and Diamond spoke to Billboard in Paris after the remastering session and admitted to feeling a little uneasy about Stardust’s return to the studio.
“You don’t know how it’s going to go,” Diamond said. “It’s a special work to do so I was a bit anxious.”
“I was a bit anxious too,” Braxe added, “but a month ago I had a listen to the song and I felt like, ‘Wow, it sounds a bit old now.’ It sounds good, but compared to today it sounds a bit old, and I thought it’s a good thing to try and update it.”It’s nothing too crazy, though: “We did some very subtle compression, it sounds a bit like on the original 12-inch,” he said.
The interview goes on to reveal the details of how the initial recording session went down and what the audience reaction was like. “Some people say, ‘When this track was played for the first time it was amazing, everybody was dancing’ — in my opinion, it’s not true,” Braxe said. “It didn’t take a long time for people to understand the structure of the track and start to dance on it, but the very first listen the reaction was, ‘What is it?’”
Sure, “Music Sounds Better With You” was definitely ahead of its time, but that’s what made this song so historic for dance music. Now that the secret’s out, we can’t wait to hear how Stardust reimagined their hit single. There’s no official release date just yet, but it’s totally worth the wait.
