Yes, it’s true: Moody Good is back. Following his 2017 release Mtgfyt, the renowned bass producer will deliver his all-new Goofball EP tomorrow through Never Say Die. He’s been releasing each track one by one throughout the week, and today’s drop is our favorite of the bunch. This EP boasts incredible sound design as to be expected from Moody Good, including today’s single “Jimmytics.” It’s sure to tickle the audiophile in you — Moody Good plays with distorted basses, chopped-up vocals, and razor-sharp stabs throughout this experimental bass tune, which is best experienced through your favorite headphones.

Along with premiering his new track, we got a chance to catch up with Moody Good to talk about Goofball EP, Never Say Die, and what he thinks of the current state of the bass scene. Presave the EP here and check out our interview below.

Hey, Moody Good! We’re so stoked to see you back with new music, especially through Never Say Die. How long has this EP been in the works and why did you choose to release on NSD?

Some of these tracks got put together back in 2017 and then slowly through 2018 whenever I could make time. Towards the end of 2017 I decided to focus on being a deadbeat dad ahead of everything else, so basically a break from producing solo stuff and kinda disappearing off the map. It’s cool that I didn’t get a “damn bruh this is so 2017” reaction. Obviously there’s touches and elements that got worked on up to release date, and nothing’s ever really “finished” anyways.

Tommy (SkisM) at NSD has been saying I should put some music out with them for the longest time and it made total sense here. They’ve killed it consistently and I was really happy I got to roll with them on this.

It’s been nearly four years since you released This Is The Investigation EP with us on NEST — what’s changed for you musically since then? What direction would you like to take your project moving forward?

I’m not sure if anything specifically musically has changed for me. I still have a desire to try everything and get a bit weird and not decide what something should turn out like before I try it. That’s a blessing and a curse… working with other people that come at it completely from the other side has made me want to find a process somewhere in between. I wanna have focus on and execute ideas but also be free enough to come across things that are unexpected.

Tell me a bit about Goofball EP. This sound design is pretty next-level and feels like quite a unique release for Never Say Die, I’d love to know what your inspirations were for this release and what the process was like.

Like I said, these are tracks that I worked on whilst I wasn’t officially working, so it mostly came about in the dead of night or early morning when I couldn’t help myself. For “SIXTYSIXTY,” my motivation was to make something that would smash out on a big sound system and make people wanna flip when it drops. It’s fun to play out fosho and it’s made me wanna make more hype AF tunes tbh. The tune with Hydraulix was us sending ideas back and forward and just doing whatever we were feeling at the time. Still, we wanted a drop to make it jokes to play out, and let’s be honest — it’s gotta have a drop it’s going out on NSD!

Who or what do you personally think is moving the needle in the bass music scene these days?

Hard to answer this one without just banging on for days, but a few off the top: really like what PEEKABOO’s been putting out, Space Laces is a monster, Bukez Finezt, Tynan, Roxas, Mastadon, YOOKIE, Krischvn, Leotrix all coming with heat recently, too many to mention, so much good music coming all the time.

Looking back to your very first releases, what are some elements of your signature sound that you like to remain consistent to this day?

People tell me I have a “sound,” like with 16-bit stuff and through to now but I’m not aware of it and I definitely don’t try to stick to a sound. I guess the process remains consistent in terms of remaining open to anything and not trying to take myself too seriously.
