Last year, we introduced you to the mysterious artist known as k?d (read “kid”). He has since rebranded, offering his dream-like remix of Hayley Kiyoko’s “Cliff’s Edge” several months ago. His debut original, “Somewhere Far Away From Here” featuring vocalist Lolaby, is more of the same progressive, forward-thinking sounds we’ve come to know and love.
Opening with white noise reminiscent of an old tube television, Lolaby gently grabs your attention and pulls you into the story. The atmosphere feels light, almost like your own little safe hiding place, as k?d introduces layer upon layer of melodic synths to create a dense wall of sound. The drumline kicks in when the song appears to reach its peak, perfectly balancing the powerful synth leads and grounding harmony of sounds in serenity. The track is a delicate mixture of synthpop and retro elements that, at its core, feels reminiscent of Porter Robinson’s Worlds.
