This is our story...

This week we’re flashing back to one of the most iconic, early rock ‘n roll/dancefloor crossover hits of the 1960’s from Tina and Ike Turner with “Raise Your Hand (U Got To).” Their notoriously abusive relationship, which Tina finally escaped in 1978, tainted the couple’s joint musical creations for many including myself. But in the wake of our just published #MeToo joint op-ed, I’m feeling better about celebrating their work and honoring Tina as the most influential female musical artist of color from the 1960’s and ’70s. Before hitting it big Tina and Ike toured with the likes of Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones, and watching old performance videos it’s pretty obvious what an influence Tina had on Janis herself as well as Mick Jagger.

“Raise Your Hand (U Got To)” is a truly timeless song – if anyone put this out today I feel like it would be at the top of the dance charts, played at every party and would become fodder for every kind of remix under the sun; you’re welcome in advance.
