Hand-picked by Deadmau5, fellow Canadian producer Eekkoo boasts a role as the poster boy for the Mau5trap label. After months on the studio grind, we’re finally getting a listen to Eekkoo’ fiercest production to date: a five track EP, Hell Is Other People.
A darkly-tinged body of work, the EP sees Eekkoo masterfully craft a foreboding soundscape worthy of its ominous title. Initially, Eekkoo commands our attention with the EP’s premiere track “Elysium” thanks to the assistance of beat whiz Casper Whirlin and a hypnotic vocal run from Swedish vocalist Sailor & I.
Cohesive, yet eclectic in styling, Eekkoo glides through industrial beats, celestial vibes, and mischief-encouraging breakdowns on “B.L.A.C.K” and “Dom Cobb.” “Skeptic’s” merciless bass line combined with an eerie muffled vocal sample flex his unmatchable ear for sleek sound design, and this may very well be the track that catches him some viral traction.
The EP’s title track, “Hell Is Other People,” is the standout of the piece. Menacing and melodic, Eekkoo moves from barraging bounce rhythms to a synth driven cool off that has us feeling like we’re on a sonic teeter totter.
After a thorough listen to the moody tour-de-force, it is clear that Eekkoo has proven worthy of his coveted Mau5kateer title. His tracks emit a crisp, slick, and glossy techno ambiance and should strike “Some Chords” with fans of the Deadmau5 production aesthetic.
