This week we’re shining our spotlight on The Magician, a man whose sophisticated blend of slick, disco-party-house and pop-leaning, vocal-rich funk-house first made a big blip on the dance music radar in 2014 with his breakout single “Sunlight.” The Magician, also known as Stephen Fasano from Brussels, Belgium, has been conjuring his own sounds under that moniker since 2010. Today we’re offering everyone who has not yet felt the magic, or just needs more magic in their life, an entry-level guide to his extraordinary, developing legacy.
The first song in our five track playlist is the extended club mix of the aforementioned breakthrough hit “Sunlight,” which you’ll absolutely recognize if you’ve been following club music even a little bit the last few years. We next included his foray into pop from about a year ago with Julian Peretta on “Tied Up.” A deep house beat woven through a proper pop melody makes for an infectiously catchy, definitely danceable pop-tastic heater that sounds like it could be a pool-side-worthy remix of some boy band’s FM radio hit.
We also felt compelled to include one of The Magician’s countless official remixes. There were frankly too many to choose from, including one of our favorites for Chromeo‘s “Come Alive” featuring Toro y Moi and his re-work of Clean Bandit’s absurdly overplayed hit “Rather Be.” Instead we went slightly off the beaten Magician remix-path to his interpretation of Aluna George‘s “I’m In Control” featuring Popcaan. Once transformed into a groovy, nu-disco house heater, Aluna’s vocals have the effect of becoming an irresistibly magnetic pull towards the dancefloor and a beat made for whipping one’s hair back and forth.
In his latest incarnation The Magician has been heading in an R&B/soul-infused direction distilled into premium, mid-tempo party music with a glittering pop edge, which brings us to the next track on this playlist. His recent release “Love Break” is a more tropical offering in the R&B vein which features French vocals from Hamza. Although more subtle than his previous releases, this song feels right at home on his monthly Magic Tape, which we also had to include. Every month The Magician releases a mix that truly lives up to its name, and The Magic Tape we included in our playlist is a live recording from Miami Music Week this year. It’s got more hip-hop than we’re used to from him, which he’s of course transformed into this own blend of house magic; that’s what he does!
You now have all the insight and musical guidance you need to fully experience The Magician; go forth and let it take you over.
