“I can only speak of my own experiences, I’m not trying to speak for other women,” The Preatures frontwoman Izzi Manfredi explains of “Girlhood,” the first single and title track from the Sydney pop rockers’ forthcoming sophomore record, further elaborating, “This song is about exploring the contradictions of my own identity.”
Carrying punk-y, gritty attributes while calling upon the accessible, radio-friendly style found in the band’s breakout 2014 single “Is This How You Feel?”, “Girlhood” itself brings to light these contradictions. Driving, powerful rhythms are met halfway with gentle harmonies, and Izzi’s proud songwriting (“Give me heroism, give me what is mine”) finds vulnerability even in the opening line of the song, “Nobody moves, it’s a movie … How do I look now? Am I beauty?”
