Happy hardcore is an offshoot of hardcore that “is typified by a very fast tempo and solo vocals with sentimental lyrics.” Popularized in the late ’90s, the generation that grew up on names like Gammer, Darren Styles, S3rl, and more is now leading the way in a 160 bpm revival. OWSLA protégé and happy hardcore aficionado Mija has just launched a new platform, Never B Alone, as a way of exposing an entirely new audience to the sounds of happy hardcore with a modern take.
For the label’s first release, Mija has enlisted the help of her friends for Never B Alone Vol. 1. Moving Castle artist Robokid gives Darren Styles a hardstyle flip with his ‘Hypermix’ of “Rest of Your Life” while Mija herself tackles the star-crossed “Come Running” with a nostalgia-filled remix. Mysterious newcomer DJ Mint Limeade, who has played a show with Skrillex and been spotted at some of Shawn Wasabi’s shows, makes their musical debut with a bite-sized mashup of Henrik the Artist and that song from the Shrek soundtrack. Nightcore even gets a nod as the originator of the term “NXC”, fan fiction, gives Durante a 160 edit on the compilation along with a long sought-after official release of cult hit “v4m0s a la pl4ya”. Even OG happy hardcore DJ, Gammer, lends his talents on an absolutely mental flip of Ruffage.
