This is our story...

This week’s MiniMix comes to up from across the pond via the UK’s own Axel Boy, and it’s an adrenaline-fueled rocket ride through the tunes he’s most stoked on at the moment. We also had the chance to lightly pick his fascinating brain to find out what makes him fall in love with a piece of music, what he’s probably doing in a parallel timeline right now, and how to keep moving forward as an artist; SoundCloud comments be damned. Learn more about Axel Boy below and enjoy this spicy mix – full tracklisting available below the interview.

What’s the vibe of this mix? What activity or activities would you recommend pairing with it?

The vibe is definitely eclectic, it’s representing the styles that i’m digging at the moment as well as what is inspiring me! I aimed to keep a solid variation in beats structures so you don’t find yourself moving in the same way throughout! It’s full of various styles so its great for lots of scenarios.. I’d definitely recommend playing it at a party or gathering with friends. It is also great for driving & exercise, there are enough progressions & switch ups to keep you entertained, on your toes & fresh with adrenaline!

If you weren’t making music what would you be doing with your life?

This is a tricky one, being creative has always been a trait of mine that I’ve played on. My first creative love was drawing, so art has always been a passion of mine. I then moved on to acting, which was my main focus until i discovered my love for electronic music! So in a different timeline I could have been an actor, I suppose I would have done anything that gravitated me towards art & performance!

What makes you fall in love with a piece of music?

Assuming we’re talking about modern music & electronic stuff. Firstly its the foundation, the beat structure is the basis that holds the song together so this is my first port of call, does it make me want to move? & does it make me long for the repetition? A solid beat doesn’t get boring even after all the repetition!

Secondly its all about the melodies and chord progressions, the progressions need to stand out to me. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be completely original- because there are only so many notes and chords. But it needs to be the right one that hits my feels! I can be won or lost with the right or wrong progression. Melodies are where i look for something unique and exciting!

Third, particularly in electronic music, i’m looking for interesting sonics. So sound design fills this bracket.

Sometimes I’m won over by well done but familiar sounds, other times i’m completely wowed by something i’ve never heard before! Finally I’m looking for soul and emotion, this can be captured by all of the above, but sometimes it’s defined by a great vocal.

What about your childhood was unique that most influenced your career path?

I guess growing up being the youngest of my family & hanging around with older people, I learned to show off my creativity and performance. I suppose in order to get respect at times but also just to make people smile, being an artist this is what the job is all about, so this developed inside me at a young age. Also being brought up with a wide array of musical influences definitely intertwined into me choosing this career path.

What’s the most memorable show you’ve played in the last year (good or bad?) and why?

ANIMALZ, Paris. 7000 people, amazing sound system, even better crowd, Parisian ravers are incredible and the overall vibe in that place was second to none.

Is mankind alone in the universe?

I believe not, the chances we are alone is just so astronomically slim! Just check out the Drake equation, if the universe is never ending then ANYTHING is possible.

Do you have a favorite meme, gif, or vid at the moment you can share?

N/A i try to refrain from memes and gifs ahaha.

Who’s your favorite artist right now we haven’t heard of yet?

Shout out to Maxx Baer whose been on a bit of hiatus of recent, but is about to come back stronger than ever. His chord progressions and melodies near enough ALWAYS do it for me.

What’s the best SoundCloud comment you’ve ever seen and what track was it on?

‘I miss the old Axel Boy’ on one of my songs. It’s not the best for good reason, but it’s the most relevant because its contradictory to what i think music is all about for the artist. Forward thinking and progression. So there is no old me, only the new, people have to know that.
